In most states the owner and driver of any vehicle is required to carry insurance that covers other drivers in the event of an accident. This way, if you have an accident that is your fault as a result of driving your insured car, the insurance company will pay the other driver for all damages, whether to the vehicle or medical bills associated with the accident. You may or may not be required to have insurance coverage that will cover your damages. For example, if you hit someone and the accident is deemed to be your fault, your insurance company would pay for their damages, but not any damages you incur, such as your vehicle. In some states, you have the option to add this type of insurance, although it will usually cost considerably more. Whether your vehicle is financed is also a factor in whether you will be required to carry full coverage insurance.
